This puzzle can be found on the web but without the 0 + 3 = ? line. This is my variant.
This is nothing spectacular. The numbers to be added form two series and therefore
are infinite in both directions. The differences in the totals increase by
2 each time and so form a continuous series of odd numbers.
There's no need for calculation, simply make a list of the odd numbers and add 'em
up down to the line required, e.g. 8 + 11 = ?
5
7
9
11
13
15
17
19
I'm bone lazy and couldn't be bothered adding them. I looked at the list, noted its
middle lay between 11 and 13, making 12 the average of the 8 numbers, and remembering
tables learnt at school 75+ years ago, automatically said (or perhaps sang),
12 8s are 96.
